Using the Open Space Framework, iPD analysed information regarding the water systems, open spaces, circulation and land use at key nodes and along the alignment of the route. The aim was to identify opportunities to integrate the road with the surrounding areas, strengthen the open space system and create or improve linkages to enhance accessibility, serve community needs and ecological processes.

During this process, the Australian CRC (Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities) contributed strategies and information regarding the urban water system and ecological function relating to urban development and infrastructure.

Finally, by integrating the network formed by the Ring Road, water, green and open spaces back into the Kunshan city fabric, iPD was able to create urban destinations that benefit various aspects of life in Kunshan and an interconnected open space framework with the potential to become a functioning ecosystem.
